Nearly every parent of a toddler has watched their child march across the room on their tiptoes at some point and wondered whether it's cute, normal, or something to worry about. Most of the time, it's simply part of learning to walk. Occasionally, it's a signal worth paying attention to.
Why toe walking is so common in toddlers
Toe walking is a normal part of learning to walk for many children, and it often resolves on its own as balance, strength and walking patterns mature. A toddler experimenting with different ways of moving isn't unusual — it's part of how young children figure out their own bodies.
When it's worth getting checked
The main thing that shifts toe walking from "probably nothing" to "worth an assessment" is persistence past the toddler years. Assessment is recommended if toe walking continues beyond 2 to 3 years of age, or if it comes with any of the following:
- Tight calf muscles or a tight Achilles tendon
- Balance problems
- Signs of developmental delay
- Features associated with autism spectrum disorder
- Sensory processing sensitivities
- Any known neurological condition
What an assessment actually involves
A physiotherapy assessment looks at ankle and calf flexibility, balance, overall movement pattern, and whether there are any developmental or sensory factors contributing to the walking pattern — not just "does the child walk on their toes," but why.
What treatment can involve
Depending on what's found, treatment may include stretching, strengthening, gait training, sensory integration techniques, orthotics, and — where indicated — referral to a paediatrician or paediatric neurologist for further evaluation. It's rarely a single intervention; it's usually a combination tailored to what's actually driving the pattern in that particular child.
The reassurance, and the exception
For most toddlers, toe walking is a passing phase, not a diagnosis. But "most" isn't "all," and a brief assessment costs very little compared to the peace of mind — or early intervention — it can provide.
Pediatric Rehabilitation at Impulse Physiotherapy assesses toe walking and gait patterns in children, with treatment tailored to what's actually contributing to it.
