Fever in Children — When to Worry and When to Relax

What Causes It

  • Viral infection
  • Bacterial infection
  • Post-vaccination fever
  • Inflammatory response

When to Observe

If the fever is mild, the child is reasonably active, feeding is acceptable, and there is no breathing difficulty, parents can continue observation, fluids, and age-appropriate fever control.

Warning Signs

  • Fever continuing beyond 2 to 3 days
  • Child unusually sleepy or irritable
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Poor feeding
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Seizures or dehydration signs
